Attached is a letter I sent to the NC DOT, asking them to decoratively light the Cape Fear River Bridge after they have made the major improvements they are now beginning. I hope you think this is a good idea and that you will contact your public officials, asking them to support this project.

Thank you.

Re: Improvements to Cape Fear River Bridge

Dear Chad:

I am aware of the upcoming improvements to be made to the Cape Fear River Bridge. The scope of this needed work carries a budget of approximately seventeen million dollars.

According to news reports, two lanes in each direction will be closed alternatively for approximately three-month periods, preventing crossing traffic in each direction alternatively. This will force the need to reroute traffic over the Isabel Holmes Bridge, creating potential major traffic jams in downtown Wilmington and the general area.

I respect the fact that this work is needed, and that NC DOT has conducted the appropriate due diligence in their project needs evaluation. However, the planned construction work will create a major inconvenience for the people of southeastern North Carolina for the six-month period or more. No doubt, there will be a substantial loss of time and money by the public.

I realize this is an unavoidable situation that we will have to deal with in as positive manner as possible and I know that NC DOT will do a good job for the pubic. I ask the public to be patient.

I would like to request that the NCDOT consider the idea of decoratively lighting the bridge. It could be a dramatic finishing touch to the project.

Decoratively lighting the bridge would give it a special iconic image and create a source of pride for the people of southeastern North Carolina. It would also be a nice thank you for our people for their patience and understanding during these difficult times.

Thank you for your consideration.

I will be pleased to assist with this project in any way needed.

I have attached an image of the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston, SC, demonstrating the type of visual impact that could be created in Wilmington.

Sincerely,
