Today I am pleased to feature the headquarters building of the City of Wilmington Fire Department.

From an architectural point of view, I feel this structure is a great example of quality urban infill development. If fits into and does not overpower the neighborhood, despite its size. Its excellent design is an attraction. Most of the parking is hidden in the rear, out of sight from Market Street.

The site on which it stands was formerly the site of the Golden Eagle Motel. I am not certain when this building was demolished.

The building is located at 801 Market Street in Wilmington and covers most of that block.

The building, opening in December 1999, is composed of 32,000 square feet.

It was designed by Jay Dechesere and Synthesis Architect and Planners. It was built by Paragon Construction Company.

During my tenure at DARE, Inc. Jay helped me with design work for our façade renovation program. He did a great job. He is now retired as an architect and is working full time as an artist. His work is excellent.

There are a few bad examples of public building’s architecture in this community. The Wilmington Fire Headquarters is not one of them.

I encourage the City of Wilmington to continue to embrace good design and construction of new structures in the future.
